Sorry for the incredibly late reply but my hubby was home on holiday recently and I haven’t been on my computer (or played any Sims).
Anyway about your question, I used to use Photoshop (which I do still use occasionally for other things) but now I use PhotoScape for my sims photos: http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php .
It is FREE! and you can do bulk batches of photo edits which I find fabulous and time saving. It is also really, really easy to use.

I feel terrible but I can’t remember where I got that recolor from. For some reason I thought it was one of the colors that came with the sofa though, as I don’t remember downloading any recolors for it (when you’re a downloadaholic things do tend to blur together after a while though :\). I feel so bad not being to answer your question! I’m so sorry I’ve not been much help :(
I uninstalled the lighting mod. Soooo much better now. You can actually see the detail on that wall plate alone now! Much, much better in my opinion.
Side note, just realized something went wonk with that end counter. Off to fix it.
